Reading log assessment
The following is a trouble-shooting file developed to help you to answer some common questions regarding the reading log assignment.

I have attached an exemplar based n the class text for you to look over.

The novel Death or Glory Boys by Theresa Breslin
This will be assessed in a end of year examination. To help you understand it, here are a few exercises to complete:

Answer the chapter questions as you read the story.

We also looked at the war poets. Attached is the template to follow for you to create your own. Choose from Wilifred Owen and Lawrence Binyon.

Make sure you cover:
Their name
Biographical details
A poem of theirs written out in full
The meaning behind that poem
or the meaning of their whole body of work - were they patriotic or more interested in sharing the grim realities of wartime.

This is all building to you answering one of the end of year questions. Here is a file of the sorts of questions which have arisen over the past few years.

Theme cards

We have made cards covering the following themes:

War and the morality of it (Hague conventions)
Pasifism
The modern role of the army in active peace keeping
Gender stereoptyping - Cal as a female terrorist and Phil for liking the war poets
The war poets - patriotic poets vs those espousing the gruesome realities of war
Phil's inner conflict
Terrorism - individuals with grudges as opposed to groups

The front of the cards has the theme stated in your own words and a quote from the text that exemplifies this.
Here is an example of this:
Breslin investigates the terror caused by terrorists choosing 'soft' targets such as civilians.
"Fingers Falter"

The back of the cards lists the main characters who bring this theme about in the text and any techniques that enhance it.
Here is an example of this:
Cal

En media res
Incompete sentences
Lack of personal pronouns

Please note that it will not be possible to link a technique to every card - that's ok.

Here is an example of an Excellence essay that we will look at in class on Wednesday. The plan is to get you to choose the most appropriate 'R' statement to wrap up each body paragraph.

We are also setting the ground work you to work on a research assignment into the teen literature genre. Follow the activity that is attached to see what constitutes teen literature and visit the library to see what books follow the conventions and which ones break them. Which do you prefer?

In Term Two, we will be focussing on picking up the threads of this assignment.

In the meantime, please make suggestions of books that you have enjoyed as recommendations to other students. You may also 'discuss' which you haven't enjoyed too, it's all part of being a critical reader.
